“You are so gracefully insane:” Anne Sexton

Anne Sexton

All great poets
have been mad
madness writes
the genius language
rhyme, rhythm, and metre
of the tumultuous brain
unsteady
never resting
words tumbling
onto pages made
of skin and sinew
madness makes them live
madness makes them die

Inspired by Anne Sexton quote: “ Even so, I must admire your skill. You are so gracefully insane.”

Written for Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie 100th prompt.

I think the only sane people are poets. Loved your poem and its passion for poets!

I loved that quote when I saw it. I also like your last two lines.

      Thank you.
I too love the idea of “you are gracefully insane.” I’m going to add it to a redo of my blog page.

Indeed. And it is only the poet who knows the true sacrifice of balancing sanity.

Poetry shows the self in stark relief. Madness needs an outlet; poetry provides the window and the door.
