pelagic starscape cynosure antiestablishmentarian moontree. Her hippie-sort parents believe a child’s names reflect her karma. Pelagic: conceived and born on moonfaerie’s quilts spread on the same stretch of high tide mark sand. Starscape: the organic unpolluted night sky. Cynosure: a lighted path. Antiestablishmentarian: reject all that isn’t free and of nature. Moontree: the bond of her parents.

Commune members wade knee-deep into birthmother ocean as moonfaire and treespirit dip their daughter’s tiny, swiggling body into the sea. The rawness of November’s waves mottles the child’s lips and skin blue.

Blue’s jacket pockets, weighted down with smooth-edged, thin, flat skipping stones, bruise-bump against her legs. She giggles, sand-sledding down the dune embankment. Tide waits for the ancient pull on it’s sinews. Bestest time for spooning rocks. The correct wrist-twist caress sends her skipper skiddling across the saltwater surface tension. One, two, three . . . counting the ripple rings until, with a soft plop, the skipper loses momentum and drowns. Her bestest spoon ever!

pelagic starscape cynosure antiestablishmentarian moontree will be for the woman; blue is for the child.

That is a name to live up too! I do like meaningful names. The image of this is so playful and really captures the 60s for me, I didn’t exist then but nevertheless I feel transported.

      Thanks, names fascinate me too!
I came of age shortly after the “summer of love.” But, had a grade school friend who’s parents were still very much flower children.
I should have been born in time to be a member of the Beat Generation. There, I would have felt at home!
Two new words for my vocabulary: pelagic and cynosure. Thanks for broadening my mind.
