Running on Empty: Lyrics Sunday

In one of those wonderful stumble upon (not the official one) occurrences when post prompts in one blog lead to links to other blogs. That’s how I came across Helen Espinosa’s blog, This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. She hosts a song lyric Sunday share. This week, she posted Glitter in the Air by Pink. Astounding lyrics!

In my comment, I mentioned I was running on empty – which leads to one of my favourite Jackson Browne songs: Running on Empty. Lyrics from Lyrics Freak

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up 101
I don’t know where I’m running now, I’m just running on
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I’m running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don’t know when that road turned, into the road I’m on
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind

Running on, running into the sun
But I’m running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don’t know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that’ll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I’m running behind

Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I’d love to stick around but I’m running behind
You know I don’t even know what I’m hoping to find
Running into the sun but I’m running behind

Here are Helen’s “rules”:

  • Post the lyrics to a favorite song or a new song you want to share
  • Make sure you credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to my post that will go up every Sunday by 9am MST (or as early as I can…)
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process

I know it’s Monday, but the “band played on.”

Play along. There’s no theme each week, so any song lyrics are fine.

I always fret about my inability to visit extra blogs–not a lack of interest, just no time/energy…but I may do it this once, since I have a song in mind :)

Oh I fret quite a bit, too. And then I miss some important event (good or bad) in the blogger’s life, and feel even more guilty for not stopping by. I have link-envy, I think. I’ll have to step back again. Getting too involved, finding too many blogs, then frustration when the words don’t come.
Sorry, feeling strange blobby, amorphous, miasma today. Weird inside, weird comments outside.

Oh goodness, I wish I could put all your anxieties to rest–the world keeps spinning, no matter what we do or don’t do here on the blogs, dear heart. I promise if there’s a major event in my life–I’ll let you know personally! :) Take it easy on yourself today, okay? Off to do laundry…mundane details of daily life…

I have heard the song but I’ve never really listened to the lyrics before. I love how it says “running on” and then “running on empty.” Great lyrics! Thanks for sharing! :)

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I was stunned, in a good way, by the Pink lyrics. Thanks so much for hosting this!
