strongest trigger of memory is smell

Vincent Van Gogh: Two Sunflowers (1887)

strongest trigger of memory is smell

I smell our affair

in bouquets of sunflowers redolent of sunshine

sheets, earthy with sudor and musk

our bodies, smells of luxuria and pleasure

incense of ardour and exhaustion

when we could those mornings

of jasmine-fragrant tea

strong dark coffee with heavy cream

dark chocolate and peppermint bark

none of smells of love could cover

sulfuric fetor of our fights

antiseptic coldness of silence

and acrid endings

yes, smell is the strongest trigger of memory

Decadent and sensual I love how it begins and then at the end such a sharp contrasting imagery
